Raycom Media's most exciting and cutting edge Television/Digital Media Station – WFXG, The FOX affiliate in beautiful Augusta, Georgia; is seeking News/Content Director.  


As News/Content Director you will lead all aspects of News Content Creation on TV, Apps, Internet and Social Media.  You will lead a dynamic team of journalists, in one of the world’s most recently constructed broadcast studio and newsroom.


Your responsibilities will include staffing, planning, organizing and leadership of our forward-thinking team.  It includes oversight of all aspects of news gathering, program production and digital production for WFXG-TV/Digital Assets and support of other Raycom Media Companies.


In February 2017, WFXG completed construction of an all new newsroom, studio and automated production facility.  At that time, we lunched “Expansion Phase I-Morning News” - and began producing 17+ hours of local news weekly.  This successfully enhanced our 10pm News Program co-produced with a regional sister station.  As News/Content Director you will actively collaborate with station and corporate leadership in the strategy, planning and execution of further TV and Digital news expansion.


You will need to be creative, flexible and be skilled in leadership, coaching and mentoring. You will need strong news judgment and audience behavior knowledge and you will lead and inspire a highly talented news staff to reach beyond established goals.

Job Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Strategically lead all aspects of the News Department
  • Develop and lead execution of news coverage strategy for the station
  • Work closely with other department heads and senior leadership to establish and achieve station goals, grow our brand & reach and further new business development
  • Oversee and collaborate daily on all news content for on-air, web site, social media, mobile and apps
  • Make decisions regarding hiring, evaluation, promotion and termination of employees
  • Critique newscasts daily to correct errors, improve coverage and provide mentoring feedback to news staff
  • Assign projects to staff and verify that deadlines are being met
  • Ensure achievement of TV and digital viewer/user rating goals
  • Foster an environment of creativity, innovation, teamwork, and high ethical standards
  • Lead a culture that owns breaking news and weather coverage on all platforms and inspire and coach superior storytelling
  • Sustain a balanced and ethical presentation in accordance with company values, policies and FCC rules
  • Maintain consistent succession planning for all positions in the newsroom
  • Evaluate workflow efficiencies and ensure editorial resources and expectations are clearly defined and met
  • Other duties as assigned

Experience/Skills Required:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Broadcast Journalism or related
  • Five years’ leadership/management experience in broadcast/digital news with a track record of successful innovative leadership
  • Must be creative, strategic, and a good communicator with strong interpersonal skills
  • Must have solid journalistic judgment and a news philosophy that emphasizes accurate, fair and unique local content, with community engagement.
  • Must have a deep understanding of social and online/digital media content creation
  • Must have a proven ability to identify, attract, motivate and develop top talent
  • Must effectively analyze audience data and develop strategies and tactics for improvement based on the research
  • Must meet deadlines, prioritize assignments and handle multiple tasks simultaneously with minimal supervision
  • Experience with Ross Overdrive or other automated news production equipment helpful
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and successfully pass criminal background and drug screenings

Physical Demands and Work Environment:

The News/Content Director must be able to stand, sit, reach, lift, climb ladders and stairs, be able to handle, control or feel objects, tools or controls.  Must be able to set up and operate equipment weighing up to 50 pounds. Must also be able to conduct telephone conversations, use electronic mail, write letters and memos, conduct face-to-face discussions with individuals or groups, make decisions without supervision, make decisions that impact the results of co-workers, work in close proximity to others, work outdoors occasionally in all weather conditions, and work indoors in environmentally controlled conditions. Work may be conducted in extremely bright or inadequate lighting conditions.
